PLAYMAKING ONE: This is the first course that children take with Scene & Heard and is aimed at those aged 9 -11. During weekly after-school classes they are taught basic playwriting skills. They then spend an intensive weekend writing a two-character play. The plays are rehearsed for a two-week period and produced to a professional standard at Theatro Technis in Camden Town on the edge of Somers Town for four public performances.

Each class consists of simple drama and writing exercises and is led by one of Scene & Heard's experienced course leaders. The classes involve a mixture of group activities and one-on-one writing time.

The writing weekend is the culmination of the eight-week course. Each child is assigned a dramaturg volunteer who is with them throughout the process and whose job is to facilitate the child's writing. The children meet the two actor volunteers, who will perform the plays they write, and then spend the weekend writing their play with their dramaturg. Each play has two characters; the children are encouraged to exercise their imaginations and characters range from the bizarre to the impossible!

The course culminates in four public performances. Children sit in a special seat during the performance of their play. At the end of their play the child takes a bow with the actors.

The performance will last approximately 2 hours and is NOT suitable for children under 7 years old.
